Transporting Dogs to the USA and Canada: Choosing a Crate for the Flight

The first step in safely transporting your dog is selecting the right travel crate. It’s essential for your pet to be familiar with the crate, so it’s a good idea to buy it ahead of time and let your dog get comfortable in the new space. This familiarity can help reduce stress and lower the chances of injury if your dog tries to escape from an unfamiliar, confined area.

When choosing a crate, it’s crucial to ensure it meets the necessary size and design standards. The crate should be made of durable yet slightly flexible plastic, equipped with secure fastenings, ventilation holes on all sides, and easy-to-grip handles. These features are especially important if your dog tends to be anxious or wary of strangers.

Crate Size Calculation: Guaranteed Convenience

To choose the right crate for your dog, start by measuring your dog and calculating the minimum crate dimensions using these formulas:

  • Crate Length: A + 1/2B (A is your dog’s length from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, and B is the height from the floor to the shoulder joint).
  • Crate Height: D + 10 cm (4 inches) (D is the height of your dog standing from the ground to the tips of the ears).
  • Crate Width: C x 2 (C is the width from shoulder to shoulder).

These parameters ensure the dog can comfortably stand, turn around, and lie down in the crate. When rounding the sizes, it is always better to choose the larger side to avoid inconvenience for the pet and problems when passing through airport security.’

There are various IATA-approved crate sizes available to fit different breeds and sizes of dogs:

  • Size 3: 60 x 40 x 40 cm (24 x 16 x 16 inches)
  • Size 4: 67 x 50 x 47 cm (26 x 20 x 18.5 inches)
  • Size 5: 80 x 56 x 59 cm (32 x 22 x 23 inches)
  • Size 6: 90 x 60 x 68 cm (36 x 24 x 27 inches)
  • Size 7: 100 x 67 x 75 cm (39.5 x 26.5 x 30 inches)
  • Size 8: 115 x 69 x 85 cm (45 x 27 x 33 inches)
  • Size 9: 120 x 81 x 89 cm (48 x 32 x 35 inches)

These crate sizes ensure that your dog has adequate space to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably while traveling.

Peculiarities of Transportation of Brachycephalic and Fighting Breeds

Brachycephalic dogs (e.g. pugs, bulldogs) require special attention when choosing a crate and organizing transportation, as they are prone to respiratory problems. We recommend using crates with increased ventilation and increased interior space.

For transporting fighting breed dogs, it is important to provide additional safety measures, such as strong metal inserts in the crate and reliable fastenings.
